La Gloire de la Tour Eiffel by Janey Kay

Camcorder

The protest is on.

Dozens of photographers say they will show up to protest for the right to take photos on the Miami-Dade Metrorail – a right that is ensured by Miami-Dade County law.

The protest is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Douglas Road Metrorail Station, 3100 South Douglas Road. Basically, just go to the corner of U.S. 1 and 37th Ave., which is Douglas Road.

The plan is to meet in the parking lot, pay the $2 fare, enter the station through the turnstiles, then make our way up to the platform where we will board a train – all while taking photos or shooting video.

Some photographers will be traveling from other stations, so they will meet us inside.

It really doesn’t matter which train we board as long as we continue capturing the event with our cameras.

Hopefully, the security guards from 50 State will leave us alone because the law is on our side. But if they begin to harass anybody with a camera, it is essential that we document that interaction, preferably with video.

But let me reiterate: the law is on our side.

This is confirmed in a letter sent earlier this week from Eric Muntan, Chief of Security and Safety for Miami-Dade Transit, to Mickey H. Osterreicher, attorney for the National Press Photographers Association:

The law allows us to use hand-held cameras for personal or journalistic purposes without a permit as long as we are not using tripods, cables or stand-alone lights.

So let’s just keep it simple; hand-held cameras. And please don’t forget to charge your batteries and make sure you have plenty of memory card space.

As you can read from the above letter, there already is movement from the people in charge, but the point of this protest is to show them that this is not just about me or Stretch Ledford, who along with me was “banned for life” from the Metrorail for taking photos, but about everybody who rides the Metrorail and wishes to take photos or shoot video.

This protest is inspired by 2004 protest that took place in New York when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority was proposing a ban on photography within the subway system. The MTA ended up dropping the proposed ban.

Incidents against photographers on the Metrorail are nothing new and date back to when Wackenhut was contracted by the county to do security on the trains. As you can see from the two photos I took below, one taken in 2007, the other taken in 2010, nothing has changed except the uniforms.

Plustek Technology Inc. has released its latest imaging product on Thursday, the SmartPhoto P60. It converts old photographs into digital files for use as a backup, for sharing online of for use in digital photo frames. The size of the scanner is enough to make typical four-by-six inch prints.

The scanner can capture a photo in as quickly as 18 seconds, and requires no software for converting or scanning photos. The scanner ships with a protector sheet for feeding through older, damaged or crumbling photos. It plugs into computers using a USB port, which powers it as well. The P60 can scan photos at 100DPI, 300DPI or 600DPI.

The SmartPhoto P60 is now shipping for $99.

There are those who say that advocates of sustainable food are doing our country a disservice by insisting we want to drag everyone back into some deprived era of the past when work was hard and food was not abundant. As Bob Stallman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, put it, “we must aggressively respond to extremists who want to drag agriculture back to the day of 40 acres and a mule.”

In 1865, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, Special Field Orders, No. 15 in hand, gave away arable land to former slaves who were freed as Union armies swept across parts of the Confederacy. Some of the recipients also got a mule, and the 40 acres and mule together were seen as all that was needed to start a family farm.

We've come pretty far from the days when a farm can spring from such humble beginnings. While the gift of 40 acres would be welcomed by new farmers today — many of whom can't afford their own land — a mule isn't a strong enough production force to allow one to compete in today's high-powered, mechanized farming landscape. And while it seems a shame that farming has gotten away from a time when anyone with a little plot and a little animal could make ends meet, do we really, as the critics say, want to return to a slowed-down, scaled-down agricultural system?

I figure it's good to know what exactly we're accused of longing for, and The Denver Post recently ran a collection of photos from the U.S. Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information that shows farm and rural life from 1939-1943. This was an era when U.S. farming was still done in a way much closer to the 1865 method than that of today, so it might be a good thing for people to see just what the farming life of the too-often idealized past looks like.

The following photos were included in a 2006 exhibit called “Bound for Glory: America in Color.” Decide for yourself whether you want to go back to 40 acres and a mule.

The key difference is how long between the fights.

    In this case: nine months.

If he had a six month layoff, he’d still be “twice a year”. But his next fight would be in September.

For instance, if he sticks with nine months layoff, he will only fight once next year.

Anyway, you’re right – he’s not going to fight all the time, and there’s not really much point to it anyway, since there isn’t anyone for him to fight. The problem is that if you guarantee people like the winner of Kampmann/Shields and Alves/Fitch title shots, then they sit on the shelf a long time. So it’s more about the rest of the division than it is about the champ.

We'd heard Panasonic was planning a more affordable stereoscopic 3D camcorder, but it looks like we won't have to wait until a mysterious July 28th Tokyo unveiling to find out for sure — it's called the HDC-SDT750, and Panny's advertising it as the “World's first 3D Shooting Camcorder.” Leaks at all the seams of the company's website afforded us the above picture, and the surprising revelation that the product may not be a brand-new camcorder, but rather an existing high-end 3MOS model (we'd guess the HDC-HS700) with a “3D conversion lens” attached. If the yet-to-be-activated product page's source code can be believed, the SDT750 will shoot in 1080p AVCHD at 60fps, feature Panny's proprietary Hybrid O.I.S. image stabilization technology, and come in a lovely shade of Henry Ford black. That's all we have for now (save a second tiny picture after the break) but rest assured we'll be keeping tabs on this one.

Update: Looks as if even more images and purported specifications have leaked out ahead of the official reveal.

    [Thanks, John]

Tom among the laptops by pcsiteuk

    from: Moiras Blog

The Lenovo ThinkPad T400s touch screen laptop is a real heavy weight in the world to touch screen computing.  Not only is it packed with a lot of computing muscle.  It is also one of the first four finger capacitive touch screens.  A capacitive touch screen has an electric current running through a conductive coating on a glass panel.  When a person touches the screen there is a change in capacitance at that point and the computer registers the exact point where it was touched.  This type of touch screen requires very little pressure and the image clarity is generally extremely sharp and bright.

The T400s comes bundled with Windows 7 and takes full advantage of it’s touch screen capabilities.  It also has it’s own support software called SimpleTap to make interacting with with computer even easier.  This unit supports multi touch functionality and as mentioned the touch screen can recognize up to four fingers at once.  I have no idea when you would actually use four fingers at once to interact with it though.  This seems like a marketing gimmick to me.  Maybe there will be a use for it in the future but I can’t think of one now.

Battery life tests resulted in an average run time of around four hours which seems to be in line with other touch screen laptops.  One thing that is cool is that you can buy an extra battery which they claim will increase the battery run time to eight hours.

One area that this touch screen laptop really falls short is that the screen doesn’t rotate and fold flat for full tablet functionality.  I have no idea why they would omit this feature.  This seems like a major oversight in my opinion.

The capacitive touch screen is ultra responsive and and this laptop is packed with some serious muscle. The MSRP for this model is around $1500.

    Here’s a look inside the T400s

    Specifications:

    • CPU – Intel® Core™2 Duo SP9600 (2.53GHz, 6MB Cache, 25 watt)
    • Operating System – Windows 7 64 bit
    • Dimensions –  21.1mm x 337mm x 241.0mm
    • Screen size – 14 inches
    • Weight – 3.91 pounds with battery installed
    • Memory – 4GB DDR3
    • Hard Drive – 250 GB Solid State Drive
    • Communications – Wifi and Bluetooth
    • Ports – 1 unpowered 2.0 USB and 1 powered 2.0 USB
    • Webcam – Integrated 2 megapixle camera
    • Security – Integrated fingerprint reader
    • Battery – 6 cell Li Ion Prismatic, optional  3 cell Ultra Bay battery

This is a cool touch screen laptop at a fairly reasonable price. It’s certainly a light weight ultra portable notebook at only 3.9 pounds. A really cool feature is the fingerprint reader. You can open the computer, put your finger on the fingerprint reader and the computer will instantly power up. With the solid state hard drive, the computer powers up in about 40 seconds.

  • Not too long ago the 12-inch ThinkPad received its 2010 refresh. While the T series got a significant update (thus being changed from the T400 to the T410) the X series was simply changed from the X200 to the X201. That means internal components were updated (processor, graphics, etc.) but the chassis is pretty much the same as last generation.

Keeping changes to a minimum certainly isn’t a worst case scenario when you consider how good the X200 was. The 12-inch X series’ design is time-tested and has been chugging along quite well, even while the company has released competition from the X301 and now the X100e. The X201 is a lightweight, sturdy, 12-inch ultraportable that has only gotten better as the internal components have improved from one generation to the next. And now it has Intel’s Core processors as well as the company’s HD graphics, making this an exciting upgrade from the Core 2 Duo generation.

For more details about the case, build, keyboard, and so on, check out our review of the X200. Sure it’s a bit old, but little has changed since then.

The specs on the ThinkPad X201 review unit are: Intel Core i5 540M processor (2.53GHz), 4GB RAM, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, Intel HD integrated graphics, and 320GB of storage.

I was going to do a full review, but given how similar this is to previous X models and how the system has been out for a few months, I’ll limit myself to some thoughts:

    • On the component side, this was a good upgrade. The X201i/X201/X201s ultraportables get Core i3/i5/i7, Intel HD graphics, Windows 7, and up to 8GB of RAM. None of these make the system unique, but it is competitive with HP and Dell (etc.) in every respect.
    • They system was originally available with a WXGA+ display in addition to the WXGA one. 1280×800 is fine for a 12.1-inch widescreen but 1440×900 is a noticeable upgrade. This isn’t available any more on the X201, and it should be on the X201s (but that’s not listed on Lenovo’s site at the moment as it’s probably out of stock). In addition to being a nice feature this is something not offered on the X201’s main competitor, the HP EliteBook 2540p.
    • For all the talk about netbooks over the past years the X201 is still a very nice size. At 11.6 x 9.2 x 0.8-1.4-inches and about 3.5 pounds the computer travels extremely well. It feels even better with a smaller battery on it.
    • Speaking of the battery, Lenovo still hasn’t put am external LED gauge on the X201’s battery. Small features like this are long overdue.
    • The port selection is still good. The system has three USB slots, headphone, microphone, modem, Kensington lock port, the ThinkPad’s standard 20V power connection, VGA, ethernet, and ExpressCard/54. There is a card reader in the front as well. The most noticeable feature lacking here is a digital video output, but chances are that The X201’s chassis and motherboard only have room for the single video output and VGA takes precedence for business users.
    • One of the USB slots is yellow. This is a your Always On USB which is designed to charge your USB devices even if the computer is off, sleeping, or hibernating. It can be toggled on and off in BIOS and set to Automatic, BlackBerry, iPod/iPhone, or Other mode. I’ve been testing it with my iPhone but it doesn’t not seem to work despite having the correct settings in BIOS.
    • The keyboard is still quite good. No system this size has yet been able to match the ThinkPad in this respect. The beauty of the X201 is that it’s the smallest computer possible to build around this keyboard.
    • The X series now a trackpad, just like the rest of the ThinkPads. This wasn’t the case on the X200. It’s not a huge change, but it’s nice to see dual cursor controls across the board. For us trackpoint users it’s unnecessary and can be disabled, or you can just not pay the extra few dollars for it.
    • The display on the X201 is still not great (this isn’t even a disappointment at this point, it’s a consistent weakness). Lenovo has gotten the brightness to a reasonable point but colors are still lacking.
    • The full-powered (standard voltage) Core i5 processor is a solid choice and it works well for this ultraportable. It’s an adequate performer and both desktop work and video playback are handled well. It provides a great reason to buy the ThinkPad over a cheaper (C2D or Atom-powered) computer.
    • In addition to the Core i5 540M buyers also get the option of the Core i3 370M, the Core i5 520M, and the high-end Core i7 620LM. It’s a bit confusing but buyers will have to research and buy accordingly. The Core i5 processors will suck down more power but should give a bit of extra performance compared to the low-voltage (but more expensive) Core i7 option.
    • Battery life is going vary based on the processor and battery you go with. Overall the X201 has a very good battery life. Most reports I’ve seen says it actually has the edge on the HP 2540p, so that’s something to keep in mind if you are considering both computers. With the extended nine cell battery you should be good for 8 hours of mobile work, if not more. There are also 4 and 6 cell battery options as well.
    • While I appreciate the longevity of the 82.4WH  extended battery I prefer to use the smaller 57WH. This one shaves some weight of the computer (about half a pound) and cuts about an inch off the end.

After spending some time with the ThinkPad X201 there is no question that this is a successful, though incremental, follow-up to the X200. It didn’t get the same chassis changes that we saw on the T series, but the X series does now have a Core i5 full power processor option plus Core i3/i7 CPUs. The X201 also introduces the trackpad to the 12-inch X models, which is going to be a big deal for some buyers. With a reasonable build at about $1500 (starting price $1099) the X201 isn’t cheap, but it’s a lot of computer for the money.

The X201 does not exist in a vacuum though, so buyers should definitely keep in mind the competition. The X301 is too far behind the curve to consider at this point, but there is the EliteBook 2540p and, on the consumer side, the Sony Z. Buyers should keep in mind that the HP has an optical drive with some builds and is competitive with the ThinkPad in almost all respects.

Verdict: The X201 is a very strong offering and it’s in keeping with what we’ve seen from the ThinkPads over the last few years. The Core i-series processors marked a big step forward for the ultraportables, especially considering that the availability of the full-powered Core i5. The choice between the ThinkPad and the EliteBooks is getting tough though. Personally I don’t care about the optical drive, but I do really wish the ThinkPad had a digital video out option. The ThinkPad has a better keyboard, but the the EliteBook’s chassis design has really grown on me. It’s basically a toss up between the two, so buyers need to pick which system’s strengths they value more.

In Depth Product Review of the Acer Aspire 5100 PC Notebook notebook computer reviews from brands Acer, Apple, Asus, Atec, Axioo, BenQ, Compaq, DELL, Fujitsu, Hp, Kohjinsha, Lenovo, MSI, NEC, Sony, SVOA, Toshiba, The Acer Ferrari 4005 WLMi is 15.4-inch screen AMD Turion powered notebook with an ATI I am beginning to really like these high contrast coatings for my home computer.

I’m writing this right now on an acer notebook computer. It’s ten-fifteen p.m., the screen is dim, and I have no problem discovering the keys. I’ve six different programs running, the batter is nice and cool, and I honestly couldn’t be happier with the item I recently purchased.

I’m no techno-geek, but I know great high quality when I see it – or use it, as the case might be – which is why I’ve now purchased two acer laptop computer computer for house use. I appear more in the variety of reliability instead of fanciness. I don’t require gadgets that are inscrutable, possessed of all the bells and whistles, which invariably make them more hard to use. I want something that turns on when I want it to turn on, has a dependable wireless connection, doesn’t overheat, and can run multiple programs without crapping out on me. I had an acer laptop computer pc before that was able to match all of that and much more. I have one now simply because, as I mentioned, I know high quality when I see it.

That isn’t to say that the acer notebook computer may be the only one available with purchasing. Some of the functions that I prefer, such as long battery life or a nice, large keyboard, might not be as essential to others. Other functions that I do not especially need – a best from the line graphics card, for 1 – are the very first thing that individuals with different needs look for.

That said, Acer is just like any other organization within the laptop computer marketplace in that they make products designed to fit all, or a minimum of most, needs. For several hundred much more dollars than what I spent I could have gotten a bigger screen, a much better operating program, a quicker graphics card or more USB slots. When it comes to picking out any notebook computer, not just an acer notebook pc, the first and most essential step is to identify what your needs are.

In the “About” section on Acer.com, you can learn about the organization:

Founded in 1976, Acer ranks among the world’s top five branded Computer vendors. In 2000, Acer spun-off its manufacturing operation to focus its resources on developing technologically advanced, user-friendly options. The decision to support the sales of its item lines via specific marketing activities that best utilise distribution channels, has allowed Acer to achieve excellent outcomes worldwide.

Acer’s product range includes Pc notebooks and Desktops, servers and storage systems, monitors, peripheral devices, digital devices, LCD TVs and e-business options for company, Government, Education and house users. Acer employs 5,400 people throughout the globe and has created a consolidated sales and service network in much more than 100 countries. Revenues reached US $11.32 billion in 2006.
